The world uses many amounts of water each day! When we actually sit down and think about this, it’s quite scary! A rough estimate, a family of four can use 450 litres a day, which is a staggering amount each year. We often hear about water being in short supply, with the winter months being a time where the country can be awash with floods. Our reservoirs are being filled with less water, so it makes sense for us to conserve as much water as possible.
The following clever tricks can help you save water this winter, save the environment and help you spend less.
Turn off the taps
When brushing your teeth do you leave the tap running? If you do leave the tap on, you are wasting up to nine litres of water a minute!
Fill up a jug of water and place in the fridge to keep cool and last throughout the day.
Get the leaking taps fixed
A dripping tap can waste 60 litres of water a week. If you can’t fix the tap yourself, call DSB for your needs!
Less time in the shower
Taking a long shower can use lots of water. A shower is also the best option for keeping clean, using less water than a bath. Experts say that a 4-minute shower should be the maximum for water consumption, and an efficient showerhead will also help to conserve water. Take a look at your central heating system too to make sure it’s in good working order, as the less time you need for the shower to warm up, the less water you’ll use.
Top tip- A power shower can use more water than a bath in less than five minutes!
Make sure the washing machine/dishwasher is full before putting on
The best way to save money is to only wash clothes/dishes when you have the maximum load capacity. So if you have an 8kg load washing machine, only use it when you have an 8kg load of washing.
Low-flush toilet
Installing a low-flush toilet allows you to flush waste away without using excessive amounts of water. Encourage your family members to only flush when needed to.
Collect rainwater
Save water when gardening, using the tap is wasteful. Collect rainwater in large plastic containers or even your bin to hold as much rainwater as possible. Rainwater can help keep your blooms, shrubs and trees hydrated during the winter months. Water your plants in the early mornings or evenings to reduce the amount lost through evaporation.
